The early adoption of advanced digital technologies has the potential to grow UK manufacturing, create jobs, increase productivity and cut CO2 emissions. In line with the UK Government’s Made Smarter Review, Digital Catapult is promoting early digital adoption and helping shape the vision for the future of UK manufacturing.
Why Digital Catapult is focusing on manufacturing
70% of the UK’s R&D spend comes from the manufacturing sector which employs 2.6 million people, making the UK the eighth biggest manufacturer in the world. In 2016 alone, manufacturing was worth £168bn and contributed to 50% of UK exports.
The early adoption of advanced digital technologies by the UK manufacturing sector has the potential to grow the UK economy by £455bn, create 175,000 new jobs, increase productivity and cut CO2 emissions over the next 10 years.
We help UK manufacturing realise its true potential
The UK Government’s independent review explored how UK manufacturing could maximise benefits by increasing the adoption of digital technology. It identified three challenges that limit the UK’s ability to reach its potential: lack of effective leadership; poor levels of adoption (especially amongst small manufacturing businesses); under-leveraged innovation assets to support startups and scaleups.
In line with these findings, Digital Catapult is focusing on overcoming these challenges by:
- Developing effective leadership in industrial digitalisation
- Increasing levels of adoption, particularly among small manufacturing
- Supporting startups and scaleups to leverage innovation assets

Developing effective leadership in industrial digitalisation for three advanced digital technology areas: future networks, artificial intelligence and immersive. We are promoting early adoption and supporting the development of solutions for application in manufacturing.
Increasing levels of adoption, particularly among small manufacturing businesses via Digital Catapult Innovation Services which offers affordable programmes that facilitate an introduction to a community of experts, researchers, corporates and investors. It also provides access to test, prototype and demonstration facilities that may otherwise be out of reach for those who only have small R&D budgets.
Supporting startups and scaleups to leverage innovation assets. Building on Digital Catapult’s existing and extensive network of small innovative businesses, our innovation programmes will attract and support more of these companies to develop solutions for UK manufacturing. By helping them leverage innovation assets, we will speed up the development and adoption of commercially viable digital solutions.
