A little more info
Virtual reality is able to effectively blur the line between reality and illusion, pushing the limits of our imagination and granting us access to any experience possible. These experiences, ones that the brain is convinced are real, will soon be available at the click of a button.
In Experience on Demand, Jeremy Bailenson draws on two decades spent researching the psychological effects of virtual reality, helping readers understand this new medium. He offers expert guidelines for interacting with VR and describes the profound ways this technology can be used to hone our performance, help us recover from trauma, improve our learning and communication abilities, and even enhance our empathic and imaginative capacities so that we treat others, the environment and ourselves, better.
Jeremy Bailenson’s main area of interest is the phenomenon of digital human representation, especially in the context of immersive virtual reality. He explores the manner in which people are able to represent themselves when the physical constraints of body and veridically-rendered behaviours are removed. Furthermore, he designs and studies collaborative virtual reality systems that allow physically remote individuals to meet in virtual space, and explores the manner in which these systems change the nature of verbal and nonverbal interaction.
Jeremy Silver is CEO of the Digital Catapult. He is an author and entrepreneur specialising in digital media, big data, music and the creative industries. He is a non-executive director of a number of early stage companies in music and media, is a member of the UK Creative Industries Council and was Executive Chairman of Semetric Ltd (acquired by Apple), CEO of Sibelius Software (acquired by Avid) and Worldwide Vice-President of New Media for EMI Group in Los Angeles. In addition, Jeremy was an advisor to the founders of Shazam and co-founded Uplister in San Francisco, which was the world’s first playlist-sharing music service. Jeremy is also the author of an acclaimed book Digital Medieval: the first twenty years of music on the web – and the next twenty. His discussion paper Blockchain or Chaingang was published by CREATe at the University of Glasgow, where he is an Industry Fellow.
