Digital Catapult launches Open Call for new centres
Open Call launches for the next cohort of centres to bring together business, innovators, academia and public sector to develop breakthroughs for the UK’s data sharing movement
London, UK. 16 March, 2016 – The Digital Catapult launches its Open Call to select new centres to join its growing UK network. Building on a successful first year, this Open Call is for the next cohort of centres designed to bring together business, innovators, academia and public sector to support its mission of developing breakthroughs for the UK’s data sharing movement.
The Digital Catapult’s previous Open Call for centres led to the opening of centres in Brighton, North East & Tees Valley (NETV) and Yorkshire. Since their launch in March 2015, the Digital Catapult Centres have had over 1500 visitors, held over 60 events, 300 SMEs have engaged with the Centres and they have developed and launched a series of collaborative projects working with blue chip organisations including Barclays, Nissan and American Express. From the delivery of the centres and their projects, over £1m additional investment has been created for the local area’s digital communities.
Data driven innovation is estimated to have the potential to create £200bn of economic value – bringing huge opportunity for the UK. From running pilot projects through to large scale initiatives, the centres are designed to enable communities to work, meet, showcase and collaborate on breakthroughs in data sharing to benefit their organisation and the wider UK economy – aligned with the Digital Catapult’s four focus areas; the sharing of closed data between organisations, the sharing of personal data in a way that’s secure and trusted, more simply sharing content and licensed data, and the sharing of data generated across the Internet of Things.
Neil Crockett, Chief Executive, the Digital Catapult said: “The UK has reached a pivotal point, ready to maximise the huge potential of sharing proprietary data. This is an exciting time for the Digital Catapult as we grow our network of existing centres and extend our reach and collaboration throughout the UK. We are calling on the amazing talent of the UK’s digital community to drive innovation and create more breakthroughs for the UK’s data sharing movement. The new centres will not only create significant impact and business opportunities locally, but will help support the UK in becoming a digital leader.”
Those interested in applying can do so here. The deadline for applications is 25 April 2016 and appointments will be announced on 6 July 2016.
About the Digital Catapult
The Digital Catapult develops breakthroughs for the UK around four areas of opportunity:
- Sharing closed data between organisations
- Sharing personal data in a way that’s secure and trusted
- Sharing content and licensed data more simply
- Sharing data generated across the Internet of Things
These are the hard kinds of data to share, but offer huge potential – an estimated £200bn of value could be unlocked for the UK. We do this by sparking pioneering collaborations and marketplaces to accelerate economic growth and productivity.
Our first Centre opened in London in November 2014 and there is now a growing network of Digital Catapult Centres and communities across the UK. From running pilot projects through to large scale initiatives, the Digital Catapult takes actions to fix real problems and enables innovation to happen with impact. The centres provide our community with a space in which they can work, meet, showcase and collaborate to benefit their organisation and the wider UK economy.
All the Digital Catapult’s work is in collaboration with others – including startups, small and large businesses, academia, innovation clusters and the public sector. We help others work together, we never work alone.
