An early adopter of digital technology, the creative sector has been at the forefront of business model disruption. Digital Catapult is helping this sector to create new markets using advanced digital technologies such as blockchain, smart contracts, virtual, augmented and mixed reality systems.
Why Digital Catapult is focusing on creative industries
It’s one of the UK’s strongest sectors, punching above its weight in global markets and is on track to create one million new jobs between 2013 and 2030. From 2010 to 2016, Gross Value Added (GVA) rose by 44.8% in the creative industries, compared to 22.7% in the economy as a whole during the same period. The GVA of the UK creative industries was provisionally estimated at £91.8bn in 2016, that’s equivalent to almost £10.5m for every hour.
The UK’s creative industries are world leading and have huge potential to realise the benefits of advanced digital technologies. This is particularly the case in immersive (virtual, augmented, mixed reality & haptics), which is being pioneered by the creative industries in the areas of film, theatre, special effects and games. A 10% share of the 2022 global market worth £7.5bn is well within the UK’s grasp.Sign up to keep updated
