Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) technologies are already transforming the global economy. These technologies use huge data sets to find better ways of completing complex tasks and range from simple process automation to deep machine learning. The ability to automate, predict and deliver is at the very heart of digital innovation. However, the rising cost of computation power is a significant barrier for small innovative companies to prosper in this market.
Why Digital Catapult is focused on AI
It’s been estimated that AI could add £630bn to the UK economy by 2035. Digital Catapult is supporting UK business to enable them to realise this potential by providing leading-edge computation power facilities and innovation programmes that facilitate collaboration across industry and academia.
The UK Government have identified the AI Grand Challenge as a key part of its Industrial Strategy. Digital Catapult is rapidly expanding its AI programme to lead the adoption of AI and grow the UK’s machine learning ecosystem.
How we support the development and adoption of AI
Digital Catapult is enabling the adoption of AI through our programme, Machine Intelligence Garage.
We are opening up the power of AI technologies in three ways:
- Providing much needed access for small innovative businesses to train their algorithms on large data sets.
- Collaborating with large businesses to push the boundaries of AI.
- Working with policymakers and academics to ensure the UK takes the lead in transparent and ethical AI applications.
Machine Intelligence Garage
Machine Intelligence Garage helps small innovative companies access the computation power and expertise they need to develop and build AI and ML solutions. We help UK businesses turn Machine Intelligence prototypes into powerful models and turn ideas into reality. More than a set of tools or a place, Machine Intelligence Garage is a comprehensive programme focused on building capacity and capability, allowing participants to experiment and engage with trial and error, solve problems, collaborate, inspire and learn, develop and test.
Firms are being challenged with an increasing burden of legal documentation to manage. ContractAI is a collaborative R&D project established to facilitate automated analysis of legal contracts.
The Royal Society
“Working with Digital Catapult allowed The Royal Society to engage creatively with AI and Machine Learning researchers across the UK, exploring how to make innovative use of rich data sets. This has helped us to demonstrate the depth of innovation capability in the UK SME community, as part of our Machine Learning policy project, as well as showing some of the potentially beneficial applications of machine learning and data analytics.” – The Royal Society
