FAQs

What does Digital Catapult do?

Digital Catapult is here to help grow the UK’s digital economy – aiming to increase the number of digital businesses and the numbers employed in digital roles.

We’re working with SMEs to help them grow and scale faster, helping corporates in their digital transformation journey with open innovation programmes, bringing academic expertise and conducting applied research and development to open up new markets in emerging technologies.

What are the Digital Catapult Centres?

The cornerstone of Digital Catapult, the Digital Catapult Centre in London opened its doors in November 2014. Digital Catapult has since launched other centres in Brighton, Yorkshire, North East and Tees Valley and Northern Ireland. Each Centre provides work space, expertise, networking and showcasing opportunities to digital businesses in the local area.

You can find out more about our Centres here.

How can I engage with you?

There are lots of different ways that you can work with Digital Catapult. We are here to collaborate with startups, small and large businesses, academia, innovation clusters and the public sector. Please subscribe/follow us to find out the latest about what we are doing and how you can be involved.

These are the ways you can get involved:

Collaborate
Take a look at Digital Catapult’s Open Calls to see the latest collaborative opportunities available. We are based on open innovation – so across every year we will be putting out calls to our network – via our newsletter, Twitter, websites and through our partners to ask for people to collaborate with us.

Meet us
Come along to one of our Coffee Mornings  held at our Digital Catapult Centre to find out about what we’re working on and explore potential opportunities.

Join a project or a Pit Stop
We have a number of projects running across the year around our technology layers, where we ask for collaboration and want people to get involved. These include Pit Stops – a highly focused open innovation activity designed to accelerate the growth of new ideas.

Events
We have a calendar of events, designed to inform, promote and facilitate innovation, collaboration and networking – please take a look at our events calendar and sign up to attend. If you would like to speak at a specific event, you can email our Events team at events@digicatapult.org.uk. If your query relates to hiring space at the Centre, you can contact us here.

Become part of one of our networks
We’re building a series of UK-wide networks, including our Personal Data and Trust Network and IoTUK.

Be part of our Showcase
If you are a startup or a small to medium sized business, you can also submit your product for consideration for our Showcase programme. We will be putting out quarterly calls around a specific theme, to enable SMEs to showcase their products and technology to visitors at Digital Catapult Centres. These will be announced via social media and our newsletter.

Are you a funding agency?

No. We are funded by Innovate UK, but unlike many of its other programmes we are not a funding agency. We became operational in 2013 with the aim of driving future economic growth in the digital economy. We are part of a family of Catapults, created to generate growth in each of our specific areas.

Rather than working with businesses on an individual-by-individual basis, we aim to provide value by helping many innovators overcome major challenges, helping their digital business grow. We do this through our facilities (the Digital Catapult Centre), expertise, and by bringing partners together.

Are you just focused on London?

No. The Digital Catapult recently launched its local centres in Brighton, North East & Tees Valley, Yorkshire and Northern Ireland – find out more here.

The majority of our projects will be outside of London and we’re looking at new platforms and other projects that will allow digital collaboration across the UK as well as intense collaboration in our Digital Catapult Centre in London.

What are your areas of focus?

Digital Catapult works across a range of technology layers:

  • Connected: Internet of Things, distributed ledger technologies, decentralised web, 5G and low powered wide area networks
  • Data-driven: trust, privacy, identity and security, blockchain and cyber security
  • Intelligent: machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Immersive: virtual reality, augmented reality, haptic and new forms of human machine interface.

Check out our About page to find out more.

How does Digital Catapult hope to be effective in helping the digital economy?

In the long term, our measures of impact will be new jobs, new products, and new national growth. But in the short-term we have some trajectory measures, such as how many businesses meaningfully use the platforms and capabilities we invest in and build.

What happens to my Intellectual Property if I work with you?

Our main intention is to accelerate innovation, not to acquire IP that is disproportionate to our contribution in project collaborations. We respect others’ rights to their intellectual property and have no interest in the ownership of any pre-existing Intellectual Property rights, know-how, or other rights developed prior to us working together.

If you would like to find out more about this please contact us at info@digicatapult.org.uk

What is an Open Call?

Digital Catapult is always looking for new ways to work with the UK’s thriving digital community. An Open Call is the way we reach out to connect and collaborate with businesses and data innovators on various activities we run throughout the UK.

The types of call differ depending on what we have on offer at any one time. It might be a call to sign up to one of our data communities like the Personal Data and Trust Network, showcase your product, service or app at our Centre in London or join one of our projects.

Who are these calls aimed at?

This will vary depending on the subject of the call. But they will all fall within Digital Catapult’s four technology layers:

  • Connected: Internet of Things, distributed ledger technologies, decentralised web, 5G and low powered wide area networks
  • Data-driven: trust, privacy, identity and security, blockchain and cyber-security
  • Intelligent: machine learning and artificial intelligence
  • Immersive: virtual reality, augmented reality, haptics and new forms of human machine interface.
